Young men are the biggest problem gamblers in Australian casinos

It is one of many findings from Australia’s first major report on responsible gambling and casinos conducted by researchers at the University of Adelaide.

In a report commissioned by Gambling Research Australia and now published online, researchers from the University of Adelaide’s South Australian Centre for Economic Research (SACE) provided the country’s first detailed snapshot of the Australian casino gambling environment, including information from casino operators and customers, and an evaluation of various responsible gambling practices.

“Despite their unique position within the Australian gambling industry, there has been relatively little analysis of the country’s 13 casinos, their practices, and the gamblers who frequent their premises so far,” said Michael O’Neil, an associate professor at University who is the executive director of SACE and lead author of the report.

The report takes into account the evolution of the casino industry and recent international developments and examines ‘just who are the casino gamblers’. The report also provides an extensive summary of the gambling industry in states and territories.

“The extent to which casinos contribute to national economic development goals depends fundamentally on their performance in attracting international ‘high rollers’,” says O’Neill.

“Because of the size of the casino, we found that casinos were placed much better than local bars and clubs to promote responsible gambling behavior among their guests and employees,” says O’Neill, an associate professor.

“Many casinos are required to limit their gambling activities in any way, including providing their own exclusion programs, training and intervening staff at a certain level, offering voluntary advance appointment cards, enforcing betting limits, restricting access to credit, and restricting withdrawals from ATMs.

“Many casinos have also initiated socially responsible actions, such as running information centers for consultation on services available to customers.

“Unfortunately, our research has revealed that there is little or no evidence to indicate how effective these provisions are in casinos. While many casinos put a lot of effort into these practices, we don’t know if they have any effect on preventing people from becoming problem gamblers or helping to stop and potentially reverse such problematic behavior.”
