Greenwood’s reaction to seeing United’s No. 11 jersey: a ‘green light’ to return

A fan who met former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood (22-Getafe CF) is desperate for him to return to the club.

“He stopped when he saw my MG11 shirt,” a female United fan wrote on Twitter on Wednesday (June 12). Thank you Mason, Man Utd, bring Greenwood back now!” the fan wrote.

Greenwood was a promising prospect for United, the hope and future of the club, especially in the midst of a striker famine. After breaking into the first team in the 2018-2019 season, Greenwood burst onto the scene in the 2019-2020 season and earned himself a regular spot in the starting lineup. In 49 appearances, Greenwood scored 17 goals and provided five assists, establishing himself as the team’s go-to guy.

At the time, the Red Devils had established a “Magma Line,” a name that was meant to symbolize the career highs of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. The Magma Line was named after the first letters of the acronym Marcus-Greenwood-Marshall. At the time, the line combined for a whopping 62 goals.

At the beginning of the 2020-2021 season, Greenwood seemed to have a sophomore jinx, but he rebounded with 12 goals and four assists in 52 games. In 2021-2022, he scored on the opening night of the season and maintained his early season momentum with six goals and two assists in 24 games.

But then came the shocking news. Reports surfaced that Greenwood had assaulted and raped his girlfriend. In an official statement, the club announced that Greenwood would not be participating in team training and would not play until further notice.

Fortunately, a comeback is possible. In August, reports surfaced that former United CEO Richard Arnold had informed the club’s staff and coaching staff that Greenwood would be returning, and that a press conference would be held to announce his return.

Unsurprisingly, there was a backlash from fans, and the club ultimately decided that Greenwood would not be returning. Greenwood’s departure is confirmed. Not in the form of a transfer, but a loan. The club honored the remainder of his contract and 안전놀이터 pushed for a loan to another club, and Greenwood left on loan to Getafe.

The talented Greenwood has made a solid resurgence at Getafe. He has seven goals and four assists in 22 games this season. Against Celta Vigo on November 11, he assisted on a theatrical goal in the 44th minute of the second half, giving him points in his last two games.

His continued good form has led to transfer speculation. In particular, he has been linked with struggling FC Barcelona and is considered a prime target for Atletico Madrid. There have even been reports that Real Madrid want Greenwood as well.

United fans understandably don’t want to see Greenwood leave. The Red Devils have had a tough start to the season, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho all struggling for form, and Jermain Defoe leaving on loan after a falling out with manager Eric ten Haag.

Because of this, United fans are criticizing the board for letting Greenwood go. They want Greenwood to stay at the club next season, but with the arrival of new owner Jim Ratcliffe, the situation has become even more of a quagmire. Will Greenwood hear their pleas?
