Do students prepare to run a 40-year-old competition? The Story of KUBA in Kookmin University

On the 7th, the last day of the 40th National Amateur Basketball Competition of Kookmin University is being held at the gymnasium of Kookmin University. The presidential cup of Kookmin University, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, opened on June 28. A total of 44 club teams across the country, including 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, are participating in fierce competition.

The characteristic of Kookmin University’s presidential cup is that the students conduct it themselves. They are in charge of everything from preparation to running the competition.

Han Sung-won (23), vice chairman of the KUBA that runs the event, said, “I put everything into preparing for this event, thinking that I will give up almost a year. It is the biggest event of the year for us. The difficulty of preparing for the event is so high that some people say that they have nothing to do after the event is over.”

The president of Kookmin University, who put so much effort into preparing for the event, is facing its last day. “Actually, I was worried that it would be very tiring and tiring. Also, the annual championship is the rainy season. Fortunately, it didn’t rain much this year. So it went easier than I thought. Considering it was our first time, we made fewer mistakes,” he said.

Han Sung-won said, “The biggest problem was that there was no air conditioner in the gym. Fortunately, last year’s problem disappeared. When there was no air conditioner, it was really hot. Now the gym is rather cold (laughs). Another problem is that we have to play games (laughs). We ran the competition and it was harder than I thought.”

“We dropped out of the quarterfinals. We used to be a good team, but there are no winners these days. Isn’t it the largest competition in Korea? It means that we ranked eighth in the nation. I’m not satisfied, but I’m satisfied because I think I got some results from my hard work.”

Although it is an amateur competition, it is a rare experience for them to have a 40-year-old competition.

Han Sung-won said, “We talk about it all the time. It’s not a good qualification for me right now, but I’m sure I have a lot to learn. I have gained a lot over the past four years. Thank you all for understanding this and participating hard.”
