The talks have already begun. Brentford are looking to sign Sergio Reguilon, who has had his loan deal with Manchester United terminated early.
Born in 1996, Leguillon is a product of Real Madrid’s youth academy. He broke into the first team in 2018 but struggled to compete for a starting spot and was sent out on loan to Sevilla for the 2019-20 season. He excelled at Sevilla and made a name for himself, prompting interest from Tottenham.
He eventually left Real in the summer of 2020 to join Spurs. Reggilon quickly established himself in the first team, but his position changed under Antonio Conte, who brought in Ivan Perisic, who knew his tactics, especially when it came to utilizing a back three.
With limited playing time, Reguilon left Tottenham for Atletico Madrid on loan last season. However, he only played 11 games in Spanish La Liga last season. Injuries took their toll. He never fully shook off the injury he sustained before leaving Tottenham and didn’t play at all in the early stages of his career.
Luckily, he managed to make his debut for Atletico against Mallorca in early November. However, in mid-February, he suffered another hamstring injury and was out for three weeks. A succession of injuries hampered his return to form, and he made a disappointing comeback.
Conte left and Enze Postecoglou came in, but there was no place for Leguillon. On the left flank, Destiny Udogie took over and performed well. In the midst of this, Man United showed interest. United were in desperate need of left-back reinforcements after losing both Luke Shaw and Tyrrell Malacia to injury. Mark Cucurella, Marcos Alonso, and others were mentioned, but the loan of Reguilon solved the immediate problem.
However, it wasn’t all good for United. In the first half of the season, Reguilon started just nine league games, two UEFA Champions League (UCL) matches, and one English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) match.
His time with United came to an end as injuries began to return. “Luke Shaw is back to full fitness and Tyrrell Malacia is close to returning,” wrote David Onstead for The Athletic. With United out of both the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and the English Football League Cup (EFL Cup), they have fewer games scheduled in the second half of the season and have decided to end Leguillon’s loan.”
Reggilon is likely to go out on loan again. One of the most likely destinations is Brentford. Fabrizio Romano, a highly respected journalist in European soccer, said: “Brentford want to take Leguillon on loan. Negotiations have already started, but the player has the final say. Several clubs are watching the situation and are interested. In any case, he will leave the club in January.”
